President John Dramani Mahama launched the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative on Thursday, April 24, 2025, a groundbreaking intervention aimed at providing free sanitary pads to 2 million school girls in public basic and secondary schools across Ghana.
The President emphasized that this initiative isn’t a one-time intervention, but rather a commitment by the government to provide sanitary pads every month, ensuring that no girl misses school due to her menstrual cycle. He stressed that “no girl in Ghana should miss school because of a menstrual period.”
By providing free sanitary pads, the initiative aims to reduce absenteeism caused by lack of menstrual hygiene products.
The intervention also seeks to empower girls to manage their periods with dignity, enabling them to attend school without fear of embarrassment or social exclusion.
Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu Haruna Iddrisu, described the launch as a step towards ending the emotional trauma young girls face due to menstruation.
Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, emphasized that the initiative aims to break the silence around menstruation, end period poverty, and create a society where every girl can thrive with pride and dignity.
