The Girls in Tech STEM Camp, a five-day residential programme held from 24th to 28th August 2026 at Wesley College of Education, Kumasi, has empowered young girls across the Ashanti Region with the skills, confidence and inspiration needed to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Organised by the Ghana Education Service (GES) in partnership with UNESCO and Beijing Normal University, the camp was held under the theme: “Closing the Digital Divide and Empower Girls through Education.”

The programme brought together 70 students from five Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region—20 students each from St. Monica’s SHS, Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS, and Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS, alongside five students each from Mancels Girls’ Senior High Technical School and Bosomtwe Girls’ SHS.

Throughout the week, the camp created an exciting learning environment where participants explored STEM through practical experiences rather than theory alone. They engaged in hands-on technology activities, collaborative projects, mentorship sessions, and personal development workshops designed to strengthen creativity, problem-solving abilities, leadership skills, and digital confidence.

One of the most memorable moments of the camp was an educational tour to the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and DEXT Technology Limited. The visits exposed participants to cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital innovation, while giving them a firsthand glimpse into the world of research, entrepreneurship, and technology careers.

The camp also featured inspiring mentorship sessions led by accomplished women working in technology and STEM-related professions. Through their personal stories and practical advice, the mentors encouraged the girls to believe in their abilities, pursue ambitious academic goals, and embrace leadership opportunities in fields where women remain underrepresented.

For many participants, the camp became more than a learning experience—it became a turning point. It opened their eyes to new possibilities and ignited aspirations to become engineers, technology innovators, AI specialists, and future leaders capable of driving Ghana's digital transformation.

The Girls in Tech STEM Camp forms part of the Ghana Education Service's broader commitment to closing the digital divide and ensuring that girls have equitable access to quality STEM education. By investing in programmes like this, GES and its partners are nurturing a new generation of confident young women equipped to innovate, lead, and contribute meaningfully to an increasingly technology-driven future.

Together, they are helping shape a future where every girl has the opportunity to dream boldly, innovate confidently, and become a catalyst for change in Ghana and beyond.
