Our Mandate

The Ghana Education Service (GES) operates under a clear mandate established by Act 506 of 1974. Our primary responsibilities include:

  • Implementation of approved national policies on pre-tertiary education
  • Management and supervision of public basic and secondary schools
  • Recruitment, deployment, and management of teaching and non-teaching staff
  • Development and implementation of educational programs and curricula
  • Monitoring and evaluation of educational standards and performance
  • Coordination of educational activities at national, regional, and district levels

Strategic Objectives

To achieve our vision and mission, GES has established the following strategic objectives:

1. Improve Access to Quality Education

Expand educational infrastructure and resources to ensure all children have access to quality schooling, regardless of their location or socio-economic background.

2. Enhance Teaching and Learning Quality

Strengthen teacher capacity through continuous professional development and provide modern teaching and learning materials.

3. Promote Equity and Inclusion

Eliminate barriers to education and ensure special attention to vulnerable and marginalized groups, including girls, children with disabilities, and those in deprived areas.

4. Strengthen Educational Management

Improve efficiency and effectiveness of educational administration at all levels through capacity building and use of technology.

5. Foster Partnerships and Collaboration

Build strong partnerships with government agencies, development partners, civil society, and the private sector to support education delivery.
