GES Strengthens Oversight of School Feeding Programme Through Unannounced Monitoring Visits

The food learners eat in school has become an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Beyond addressing hunger, quality nutrition is scientifically proven to support cognitive development, improve concentration, and enhance overall academic performance.

In line with this understanding, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, together with his Management Team, continues to accord high priority to school feeding across the country.

Over the past few weeks, the Director-General, accompanied by the Chair of the GES Council, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, and other members of Management, undertook unannounced monitoring visits to selected schools in several regions.

The purpose of these visits was to conduct firsthand assessments of:

•The hygienic conditions under which meals are prepared

•The type, quality, and nutritional value of food served to learners

•Concerns and suggestions from students, teachers, and kitchen staff on improving the feeding programme

These unannounced visits, which will be carried out periodically, are aimed at providing Management with real-time, on-the-ground information to inform policy decisions and strengthen the implementation of the school feeding system. This approach ensures that learners receive safe, nutritious meals that support their health and readiness to learn.

The Ghana Education Service remains committed to creating safe, supportive, and nourishing learning environments for all learners nationwide.
