INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MATHEMATICS

The International Day of Mathematics was successfully celebrated on 13th March 2026 at Ghana Senior Technical School (GSTS), bringing together students, educators, religious leaders, and distinguished guests to highlight the importance of mathematics in education and national development. The event was chaired by Kwabena Nketia V, who emphasized in his address that mathematics plays a vital role in everyday life and forms the foundation of every profession and field of study. He also spoke about the remarkable intellectual capabilities of Black people, noting that many inventions originating from the Black community have historically been credited to others. He therefore encouraged learners to be intentional about their studies and take responsibility for shaping their own futures through dedication and hard work.

Representing the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, the Frederick Festinous Faidoo attended the programme and encouraged students to develop a strong interest in mathematics as a tool for innovation and development. The event was also graced by the Emmanuel Essuman, whose presence reflected the Ghana Education Service’s commitment to strengthening mathematics education among young learners.

A major highlight of the celebration was a quiz competition held in five categories: Kindergarten, Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Junior High School (JHS), and Senior High School (SHS). Schools from various districts participated, creating a vibrant atmosphere of academic competition and enthusiasm. At the end of the contest, St. John’s emerged as the winner in the Senior High School category, while BOPP D/A JHS, Mpohor placed first in the Junior High School category. Scofinaf D/A Basic, East Wasa took the top position in the Upper Primary category, and Tarkwa Goldfields Primary, Tarkwa Nsuaem won the Lower Primary category. In the Kindergarten category, two schools emerged as joint winners, with St. Anthony of Padua, EKMA, and Shama Methodist KG, Shama, both placing first after an impressive performance.

The event attracted several religious leaders, teachers, and community stakeholders who gathered to celebrate the power of mathematics in shaping young minds. The success of the programme was made possible through the support of sponsors including the Ministry of Education, Bank of Ghana, Voltic Ghana, Ghana Education Trust Fund, African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS Ghana), Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, and Twellium. The celebration not only showcased the brilliance and potential of young learners but also reinforced the importance of mathematics as a critical tool for problem-solving, innovation, and national development.
