In a major step toward promoting equity and inclusion in education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD), has successfully piloted the Ghanaian Sign Language (GhSL) Curriculum. The initiative seeks to standardise sign language instruction across pre-tertiary schools (from KG to SHS) and ensure that no learner is left behind.
A five-day workshop held between 13th to 17th Ocrober 2025 brought together curriculum experts, teachers from special schools, and representatives of advocacy groups to review, revise, and validate the GhSL curriculum materials. The participants explored strategies for effective bilingual instruction using sign, speech, and text to strengthen communication and learning outcomes for Deaf learners.
The experts emphasised the importance of bilingualism in inclusive education, noting that Deaf learners must have equal opportunities to access quality education in their preferred language. They urged stakeholders to contextualise the curriculum to reflect Ghana’s cultural and linguistic realities.
The GES Special Education Division reaffirmed its commitment to training teachers, strengthening partnerships with the Deaf community, and promoting continuous professional development. Efforts are also underway to secure CPD accreditation for participating teachers, ensuring their professional growth and recognition.
Through this initiative, GES continues to demonstrate its dedication to inclusive and equitable education for all. The GhSL curriculum represents not just a new teaching framework but a national commitment to empowering Deaf learners, celebrating diversity, and fostering lifelong learning opportunities within Ghana’s educational system.
