GES Strengthens Financial Accountability with Nationwide Capacity-Building Workshop for School Leaders and Finance Officers

The Ghana Education Service has successfully concluded a two-week intensive financial management and audit workshop for Heads of Schools, Accountants and Audit Officers across the country, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability and prudent resource management within the education sector.

The workshop, which ran from 30th November to 13th December 2025, brought together 260 participants drawn from selected schools and regional offices nationwide. Participants included Heads of Schools, School Accountants, Regional Internal Auditors, Regional Accountants and representatives from Headquarters. Key directorates represented were the Internal Audit Unit, External Audit, Budget Unit, the Office of the Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access & Management Services), the Public Relations Unit, and the Finance Directorate.

To ensure effective engagement and practical learning, participants were grouped into four cohorts:

Cohort 1: Ashanti, Upper East, Upper West, North East and Savannah Regions – 62 participants

Cohort 2: Central, Western and Western North Regions – 64 participants

Cohort 3: Eastern, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Northern and Oti Regions – 64 participants

Cohort 4: Greater Accra and Volta Regions – 64 participants


The sessions were facilitated by a team of ten seasoned professionals with extensive experience in public financial management and auditing. Leading the facilitation was Dr Musah Imoro, Director of Finance. He was joined by Abdulai Mahamood and Richard Tetteh from External Audit; Jeremiah O. Ansah, Head of Budget; Victoria Kesewaa Sam Haizel, Acting Chief Accountant; Mensah Jerry Kotey, Head of the Audit Unit; Alberta Oduro Gyamfi, Sherrie Kwaku Ahadzie and Francisca Duah from the Audit Unit; and Rev. Bismark Akandi, Immediate Past Head of Audit.

The workshop focused on strengthening compliance with financial regulations, improving record-keeping practices, enhancing internal controls, and clarifying the roles and responsibilities of school leaders and finance officers. Participants engaged in practical case studies, scenario-based discussions and hands-on exercises designed to address common audit infractions and promote best practice in school financial administration.

In his remarks, Dr Musah Imoro underscored the importance of transparency, accuracy and timeliness in financial reporting, noting that effective stewardship of public funds directly impacts teaching and learning outcomes. He encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained to improve systems at the school and regional levels.

The initiative forms part of the Service’s broader commitment to institutional strengthening, accountability and improved governance. By equipping Heads of Schools and finance officers with the requisite skills and knowledge, GES continues to reinforce its resolve to safeguard public resources and enhance service delivery for every Ghanaian learner.
